The world is complex. Supposedly, human beings have been constantly and consistently progressing as far back as we can figure, so the world should be a better place than it was five hundred years ago. However, five hundred years ago you could drink from any mountain stream without fear of chemical poisoning, there was no chance of the world being destroyed many times over by nuclear submarines hiding in the ocean, and it would be unheard of to not know one’s neighbors. By any realistic definition of slavery, there are more slaves now than at any other point in history, and while we grow enough food to feed our over-populated world, starvation is a daily threat to millions.

These paintings are about the complexity of the world, about the unnatural way history seems to be unfolding, about fear and confusion, and about chickens. I like chickens.
